“On Taṣwīr or the Inherently Incomplete”

Silvia Naef and Charlotte Bank

American University of Beirut, POSTPONED

Recent scholarship in anthropology and art history has recalled attention to the historical term taṣwīr by contextualizing and theorizing it within moments of overlap between Arab Modernist artistic practice and nation building projects in the 20th Century. This conference will present how scholars and artists ponder over the ongoing possibilities of this concept in its practicable current permutations and potential future extensions as well as revisit its many shifting pasts.

During the conference, Silvia Naef will deliver a lecture titled “Giving Shape to the Levant at the Paris Colonial Exhibition in 1931,” followed by another presentation by Charlotte Bank titled “Taṣwīr as Commitment: An Early Modern Painter in Ottoman and Mandate Syria.”

The event “On Taṣwīr or the Inherently Incomplete” conference, arranged by Saleem al-Bahloli, Bilal Orfall, Walid Sadek, and Kirsten Scheid, is scheduled to occur from October 20 to 23 at AUB (American University of Beirut).
