Arbeits-Räume

curated by Charlotte Bank and Salah Saouli

17.6-2.7.23, Art-Lab Berlin

Artists: Maher Abi Samra, Mahmoud Dabdoub, Shahram Entekhabi, Pfelder

The exhibition Arbeits-Räume (Working Spaces), the second exhibition of the project "Warum lacht das Meer“ (Why is the Sea Laughing) explores the different places where work takes place, whether public or private, wanted or unwanted, welcome or unwelcome.

The photographer Mahmoud Dabdoub relocated to Leipzig from Beirut in the 1980s and has since then been documenting life in both cities ever since, always as a sensitive observer of the working population and their everyday lives.

In his work, the multi-media artist Shahram Entekhabi addresses the perception of the “foreign” and often slips into the role of the outsider himself in his performances and videos. In the video Per un pugno di euro (2007) a small group of artists recreates the everyday life of Eastern European street musicians and observes the reactions of the audience.

Pfelder’s installation Artist at work (2023) poses the question of artistic work, playing with clichés and expectations. What is artistic work anyway? How do artists work?

In his film A Maid for Each (2016) and the accompanying installation work, the filmmaker Maher Abi Samra investigates the recruitment process and everyday work of domestic workers in Lebanon. He traces the economic sector and the infrastructure that has developed to meet the increasing demand for employees.
