La mosquée de Cordoue : un unicum architectural

5 February 2025

Villa Dutoit, Geneva, Switzerland

Public lecture organised by ACES at the Villa Dutoit, Geneva, 7 pm

Leïla El-Wakil

From its Roman foundations to its Islamic golden age and Christian transformation, discover how the Mosque-Cathedral of Córdoba became a living testament to cultural exchange.

Leïla El-Wakil will unravel the captivating story of this architectural masterpiece, where a mesmerizing forest of columns meets Renaissance grandeur. At the heart of the discussion: how should we interpret this unique fusion of Eastern and Western traditions? Emperor Charles V once regretted the cathedral’s insertion into the mosque – but was this transformation a loss or an enrichment of the building’s cultural legacy?

Through stunning visuals and expert analysis, this lecture will offer fresh perspectives on this UNESCO World Heritage site, inviting you to form your own view on one of architecture’s most intriguing monuments.
