D’Istanbul au Caire, 1000 manières d’être moderne (2025)

Documentary Series directed by Ilana Navaro

Join Nadia Radwan alongside fellow art historians Kirsten Scheid and Nada Shabout in the three-part documentary series From Istanbul to Cairo: 1,000 Ways to Be Modern, directed by Ilana Navaro.

Istanbul, Beirut, Baghdad, Cairo. From the end of the 19th century, artists from the Ottoman Empire set off for Europe to learn new techniques. But this journey brought them back to their roots, as oriental fantasies were all the rage in Europe. Gradually they began to define their region through their own eyes and invented an alternative modernity in the process.

France, documentary, 2025, 60 min.
Screenplay: Ilana Navaro, Karim Miské
Editing: Christine Marier
Producer: Juliette Cazanave
